In the state of Alabama, death certificates are available at the Alabama Center for Health Statistics. This facility has filings for people who have died in Alabama since 1908.
In the state of Alabama, death records are considered confidential. A restricted access for 25 years proceeding the date the person died is in effect. For persons who are deceased less than 25 year, the only persons able to obtain a death certificate are those related to the deceased.
Relationship is defined as mother/father, husband/wife, son/daughter, grandchildren, and sister/brother. A legal representative of the family/estate may also obtain a death certificate, or an informant listed on the certificate as providing information. Should the person(s) be deceased in excess of 25 years, certificates may be obtained by anyone upon payment of a fee.
For each request, as much information as available from the following list will need to be provided:
Full legal name, date of birth, date of death, race, social security number, county (city) of death, sex, age at death, spouse, parents, your name, your signature, relationship to deceased, mailing address, phone number.
The search fee for one death certificate (certified copy) is $12. Additional copies are $4. This fee is payable by money order or check to “Vital Records.” Cash is not accepted and fees are non refundable. Faster service will warrant additional fees.
